Welcome to The Select Sires Podcast, talking Your Success, Our Passion. Starting in three, two, one.

Ethan Haywood

Hello everyone and welcome to season two, episode seven of The Select Sires Podcast. I am your host Ethan Hawyood and in this episode I will be passing the microphone over to team members of our sire team to review the December sire summaries. In this first segment Holstein Sire Analysts Kevin Jorgensen and Rick VerBeek will recap the new trait and index leaders, and they will include updates regarding bull dams, cow families and insights from their travels. Tune in now as Kevin and Rick summarize the results from the December Sire Summaries.

Kevin Jorgensen

We're going to start this morning with a few of the proven highlights. But Rick, why don't you tell us a little bit about a couple of the graduates that came from your neck of the woods?

Rick VerBeek

Two nice new graduates coming to us from our partners up at Oakfield Corners. The first one is 7HO15624 SUPERB. He's an Einstein son out of a 7HO12978 HOUSE daughter that’s 83 points. The next dam is a Very Good Rubicon and then a 7HO11351 SUPERSIRE. So, a nice proven sire here with a proven lineup behind them of high-ranking, barn-favorite kind of sire pedigrees behind this bull. He is No. 32, I think, on the active TPI® list now, and you can see he’s a casein specialist with being A2A2 and BB, a very low somatic cell, good mastitis resistant bull with nice Fertility Index, and a really solid CFP at +159 lbs. You couple that with a really solid Type proof, nearly two points on Udder Composite and then with that bull's pedigree, he just complements our lineup so nicely, Kevin, from an outcross standpoint. He's a bull that you can use right up and down the road. He's going to work really well on the 7HO14454 LIONEL daughters, the 7HO15167 GAMEDAY daughters, the 7HO16276 SHEEPSTER heifers, and then, of course, the plethora of 250HO14134 RENEGADE daughters and granddaughters that we have out there. The bull just complements everything so, so nicely with a different sire stack and a really solid proof now. So, a nice new graduate to start out with that we're really, really happy with in SUPERB.

Kevin Jorgensen

Should make a great SMS® (Select Mating Service®) bull, that's for sure.

Rick VerBeek

Yeah, absolutely, and another bull that should fit the SMS program extraordinarily nicely is 7HO15839 OCD Alphabet MAGNUM-ET. You know that 7HO14320 ALPHABET is certainly one of our favorites and has been for a long time. Nice to have, now the next generation coming to us in proven sire form. MAGNUM with 180 daughters and 63 herds. A production specialist like his sire. He's one of three bulls in our proven sire lineup, Kevin, that are over +2,000 pounds of milk and +1.50 on UDC. So very elite company. The other two bulls in that category would be 7HO15348 PAYLOAD, who you see right at the top of the TPI list, and 14HO15582 MASHAK, another bull that we won't talk about here today, but another new graduate that offers a really unique, diverse pedigree. MAGNUM, with that solid Udder Composite, high protein pounds, big milk index at +2,143 lbs. is our No. 7 Milk bull. He's an A2A2 sire and a bull with a really solid Sire Conception Rate there at +0.2 as well. And again, a little different kind of a bull. So when we look at where can we utilize him effectively, you take all that RENEGADE blood, the 7HO15085 PARFECTs, the 14HO15223 CONWAYs, the 7HO15112 TAOSs, the 7HO15179 TROOPERs, certainly places to use them. And then let's not forget about pedigrees. We're going to talk a lot about cow families throughout this presentation. His dam, OCD Jared Menna 52294-ET (EX-92-EX-MS), was a 92-point 7HO13907 JARED daughter that you absolutely loved every time you saw her. Next dam, OCD Burley Menna 41515-ET (VG-86-VG-MS-DOM). Next dam, OCD Delta Menna 34187-ET (VG-85-VG-MS-DOM). So a nice combination of sires and something a little bit different to lead us off here in our proven sire graduates today.

Kevin Jorgensen

And he's a bull that my clients continue to tell me how much they like him. So it's exciting that he was added into the new proven lineup. A couple of bulls that came in from my neck of the woods, 7HO15640 Terra-Linda MOONRAKER-ET. A bull that's a late RENEGADE son, but the great part about RENEGADE is he just keeps making good bulls. Summary after summary, we brought in 7HO15471 ZZ TOP last time. Now we've got MOONRAKER coming into the lineup. The exciting thing about this bull is number one, as you mentioned, cow families, Rick, a bull that's got 13 generations of Very Good and Excellent dams on the bottom side of his pedigree. It goes back to the Gold-N-Oaks S Marbella-ET (VG-89-GMD-DOM) cow family back here in Wisconsin in that pedigree. So not a skip or blip in his pedigree for 13 generations. A little different being a Silver x Wings. So it's a different pedigree there. He's right at the top. At +3006, he'll be in the top-50 TPI bulls. But what really differentiates this bull a lot is his Fertility Index. He'll be one of the highest Fertility Index bulls in the top-100 at +3.1. He's got exceptional not only DPR, but CCR and HCR to give him those high Fertility Index values. And then, the other part that I think is really, really unique about this bull is where he fits on Teat Placement, size, shape, and length. Those are things that we continue to hear from customers that they want those teats more central in the quarters. And the right rear teat placement, this is a bull that gets all of those pieces centralized like his sire. And then the extra teat length that goes with it. So, it's not a surprise this bull's a RobotPRO® bull, and I think a bull, again, that should get a lot of use in the SMS program.

Kevin Jorgensen

One of the other bulls that came in this time, he's an SSI-developed bull from one of my clients. The maternal line goes back to several clients that I've had the chance to work with. And that's 7HO15778 BEETHOVEN. One of our first TAOS sons to graduate back to active service. He's a bull that, like his father, TAOS, is an exceptional protein bull. He's got those good mastitis resistance traits. Again, a bull that fits that RobotPRO designation. Got the right set of caseins. And then on top of it, he's A2A2 and BB. Some of the earliest daughters we saw, we toured some of these at the World Dairy Expo tours this fall at both Siemers Holsteins and at Larson Acres. Just scored a bunch of these at Siemers Holsteins last month when they scored. They really, really like these cows. That good production seems to be following through on the daughters and people have been very, very happy with them. He's a bull we used as a former sire father. Then to tick it off he's +1.4 on Sire Conception Rate so a bull you can use with confidence on sire conception. His dam Ms T-Spruce Legacy 13312-ET (GP-82) was a major donor at T-Spruce Holsteins and ended up being an 82-point young cow, the next dam Ms T-Spruce Dworth 11342-ET (GP-82) and then about nine generations Very Good and Excellent goes back to actually, back in your neck of the woods, Rick, Muranda Oscar Lucinda-ET (VG-86-GMD-DOM) the high, production cow years ago, same cow family as, Progenesis Positive goes through the Jauquet’s, cow family that back to third name is the Very Good Jauquet Yoder Porsche-ET (VG-86-EX-MS-DOM). So, a neat bull with a cool pedigree and like his father TAOS a production and protein, but RobotPRO specialist.

Rick VerBeek

You know you've made it in the industry, in the world when people recognize you by a name, one name, for our international friends, the world of soccer, Pelé, Messi, basketball here in the U.S., Magic, Bird, Michael, the world of A.I., KeJo (Kevin Jorgensen), you know you've made it. Kings-Ransom Mg Cleavage-ET (EX-95-EX-MS-DOM) is one of those cows, one of my favorite 7HO11314 MOGULs at Excellent (95) from Kings Ransom that when you dig into this pedigree, if you want full, full pedigrees, Cleavage is the epitome of that. And it's actually a transition. We go all the way back. Everyone knows Glenridge Citation Roxy (EX-97), right? We know Roxy. A couple of generations later, the family became or the branch became the Hannoverhill Tony Rae (EX-96-3E-EX-MS). And now here in modern time as we live, it's the Cleavages. You say Cleavage, you know exactly who we're talking about. And one of the really nice proven bulls, a grandson of hers, is the 250HO12961 DOC son, CADILLAC, 7HO15634. He is the DOC out of the, it says on your screen, 88-point 7HO12198  KINGBOY, but she was scored 89 up in Canada. A bull that had a really nice day for us at +2.61 on Type and +2.18 on UDC. He is our No. 4 Type bull in our proven lineup here today. He's proven to be an outstanding conception bull at +1.5 on SCR, and he's a bull that still gives you over +1,000 of Milk. We talked a lot about the success, Kevin, of the H's and the P's at Siemers and the DOC family. Well, here's a bull that is not an H or a P that should really complement and work back and forth very, very nicely there. And, of course, with all the success of Delta-Lambda daughters in that high-type world, a bull that doesn't possess any Delta-Lambda blood either. A nice new graduate for us in CADILLAC to really exemplify one of the deepest, fullest, most well-respected cow families. And a cow family that the Kings were at World Dairy Expo this year on their own, their own show string and I think really brought to light the quality of the Kings Ransom breeding program in what it's doing in all facets. We talked about 7HO17411 DENYME, a high genomic bull. Now we're here on the other side of the world talking about a proven high-type bull in CADILLAC. So, I think a really exciting new graduate for us in the proven side of things.

Kevin Jorgensen

We just wanted today to talk about some of these different bloodlines that really have shaped our program. We have great admiration for these cow families. And so Rick, there's no better way to start than your neck of the woods at Oakfield Corners.

Rick VerBeek

7HO16276 OCD Trooper SHEEPSTER. This bull has been in the NxGEN® program for an awfully long time. Finally decided to release him into the GForce™ program, put that semen out on trucks and let it roll. And I think you are going to be the beneficiaries of that. Obviously a bull that we used heavily as a mating sire. We already have 25 SHEEPSTER sons in our lineups, either NxGEN or GForce, including the No. 1 overall bull on our program, the 7HO17191 MICAN bull. So he's going to have a major impact when you look at what he has already done on the female side of the equation. While there aren't any fresh yet, when you look at the highest ranking TPI heifers in the breed, Select Sires has 59 of the top 100 and a vast, vast majority of those are daughters of SHEEPSTER. So he's going to have a massive influence on our total program. And the bull has been rock solid in terms of his genomic evaluation since he was released. And that's why he stayed in NxGEN as long as he did. Still a huge CFP bull, a big protein bull at 86 pounds of Protein and 139 of Fat. A no holes linear profile. A bull that I would expect is going to sire the same kind of cows as his mother. A moderate size with good dariness and strength, really nice udders, and really solid fluid feet and legs.

Ethan Haywood

Thank you Kevin and Rick for those updates regarding new trait and index leaders of the Holstein breed, stay tuned as Jersey Sire Analysts, Herby Lutz and Marc Bolen, highlight the Jersey sire summary results.

Herby Lutz

Well, let's move right into our December graduates, Marc. Like you said, it was four of them, all in the top-20 for JPI™ in the breed. And why don't you lead us off with 7JE1933 JX ELS {6}, since you were the first one to see milking daughters from our camp?

Marc Bolen

Yeah, so this one I caught end of May, beginning of June, and we knew he wasn't going to have enough data in August, but we were hoping for December. And he for sure came through. These daughters that we have pictured, were at Clover Farms in Illinois. Just absolutely blew myself away. Youthful mammary systems, plenty of strength, dairy, width. I mean, it's just a complete balanced group of daughters that I've seen there. And I think we pictured three of them and I think I saw eight of them and I was splitting hairs. I could have pictured them all. But this bull starts on the proven rankings as the fifth high for JPI at +164. He's +1,108 Milk, +121 CFP and still has plus percents on a breakeven DPR. So it's really, really hard to get that common or positive areas across there. You find bulls that have one, but maybe not the other. But this bull kind of does it all. He's +13.7 JUI™, No. 4  for HHP$® (Herd Health Profit Dollars®) in the proven rankings amongst all bulls. And No. 11 for CM$ at +607. But he also is +823 DWP$®, A2A2. Good on the wellness traits. Positive on the Calf Wellness Index™. A bar chart that you like to see for strength and stature and udder traits. But this bull blew me away in June and I'm glad six months later we get to talk about him again.

Herby Lutz

Yeah. And just want to point out when we look at when you look at Type data this time, with some situations in California, we didn't get data in October from California. So in April we'll see a big jump in Type numbers for all the bulls because there are so many Jerseys in California and so much data comes out of that state. They got scored in November instead. So, keep that in mind when you're looking at these. But Marc, you and Preston, when y'all got to Clover Farms, y'all called that first night and it was pretty impressive.

Marc Bolen

I think this bull is going to be a good seller for us and a different kind of pedigree, even though he's a 7JE1758 JX THRASHER {6} out of a 7JE1505 JX POGBA {4} and then a Mackenzie. So another good addition from the Victory herd and Kevin Souza out there in South Dakota.

Herby Lutz

Well, Marc, I'm going to take 14JE2002 VOLANT next. He's another JX THRASHER {6} son developed at Valsigna, the Wickstrom family there in Hilmar. Just a balanced bull. Another one just like you talked about with JX ELS {6}. +1,106 on Milk, over a hundred (+102) CFP. He's the No. 6 JPI bull on the list this time. No. 6 for HHP$ at +$686. He's a nice CM$ bull at +$645. He's a bull that's got a great SCR, +12.4 on JUI, +$928 DWP$. And look at his calf wellness, +157 Calf Wellness Index, 108 Calf Livability, 113 Calf Scours, 107 Calf Respiratory. VOLANT’s been a bull that has sold from day one, Marc. He carries a lot of the designations with FeedPRO® and RobotPRO. And he's a bull that just last week I had a dairyman call and say, “Man, these VOLANT daughters are really, really good.” So looking forward to getting some pictures of those before the next sire summary, Marc.

Marc Bolen

The next one also coming from the Valsigna herd in California is 7JE1965 Valsigna Pine BLIZZARD. This one is a JX THRASHER {6}-free pedigreed bull. He's a 7JE1699 JX PINE {6} son out of Valsigna Steve 31815 who’s  Very Good (85%). That'll perform. So, a different pedigree to use on the JX THRASHER {6} blood and still ranks high, even though he doesn't have JX THRASHER {6} in him. He's +159 JPI that’ll make him No. 7 for JPI, +1,361 of Milk, +122 CFP. So he's No. 10 for CM$, No. 13 for Milk, No. 6 for Fat, No. 10 for Protein, and No. 6 for CFP amongst proven bulls. No.7 for HHP$ at +$685. Another DWP$ bull, as Herby just talked about in our last bull, a +$1,088 DWP$, +$151 WT$, and +$151 CW$. So, and a little different across the board, positive SCR and the daughters we've seen have really impressed us across the country. So a new bull that is JX THRASHER {6}-free to use on that JX THRASHER {6} blood, but a bull that we've really been excited about and has sold well from a young bull, and we hope he continues on in the proven ranks.

Herby Lutz

I've loved the JX PINE {6} daughters. Marc has as well. And to see a JX PINE {6} son graduate this high to have on top of the JX THRASHERS{6}. So now we have, and we'll get to 7JE1789 JX CHATHAM {4} here in a little bit. But Marc, we've got three bulls that are totally outcrossed, all in the top seven of the breed, proven that you can mix and match on top of each other and really create breed gains and improvement to make a more profitable herd. Marc, I'm going to get to talk about our fourth new graduate. He's another JX THRASHER {6} son, but he's one that doesn't need a lot of introduction. He sold a lot of semen as a young bull, and he graduates in the top-20. He's No. 19 for JPI, and that's 7JE1980 KAMAKAZI. He's the JX THRASHER {6} out of the 95-point 7JE1038 VALENTINO, then the Kokomoo that I think is (E-91%). Is that right?

Marc Bolen

Yeah, I believe so.

Herby Lutz

Super good, deep cow family. Cows that you just love develop down at Boers in West Texas. And the Kokomoo was bred at Yosemite, so you've got some Jerseyland Sires owners in there for quite a while that are true Jersey enthusiasts. And this bull, Marc, he has not disappointed. +1,279 of Milk. A bull that's great Somatic Cell he just does a lot of things right +18.9 JUI to start with. Like I said we'll be getting a lot more data before spring but with this type proof and these 98 daughters and 19 herds with this production, we felt like it was time to just keep him selling in the marketplace, Marc.

Marc Bolen

Yeah, and this bull has been talked about around the world too. I know there's been a couple times at different shows internationally of heifer classes that have had a KAMAKAZI win the class and stuff like that. So, it's not just a domestic bull that we've noticed him at, but he's been talked about around the world. And then we're glad to see him in the proven ranks with almost 100 daughters in his milking proof.

Herby Lutz

Really great graduation class for Select Sires and all the brands that we represent and really just excited about these four bulls and getting to see more of them. And Marc, why don't you take us on to the number one bull in the breed?

Marc Bolen

Well, he was number one last time and he held his rank this time and he's still number one. So this bull I don't think needs much introduction. The 14JE1921 JX CRISPIN {5} bull, JX THRASHER {6} out of JX Primus Fournette Cerys 560 {4}-ET (VG-84%). This bull sits at +189 JPI as I said it makes him No. 1 in the breed. He'd be the No. 1 HHP$ bull at +$821, No. 2 for Cheese Merit, No. 1 Productive Life bull in the proven ranks, No. 4 for Livability with a positive SCR. So, you got production, type, health traits and fertility all in one. Then I did a little sorting. He's the only active bull that is over +3.0 on DPR and over +400 pounds of Milk. So, +3.3 DPR is really, really outstanding. But then you've still got production to go with it. So, just kind of a bull that stands in his own, checks all those designations up there at the top of your screen and FeedPRO, RobotPRO, and GrazingPRO® . Just a really, really balanced bull across the board and has continued to add daughters and do well doing it.

Ethan Haywood
