Penlow Farms Relies on UDDERMINT

Brad Lowry and Penlow Geo Integrity Brad Lowry and Penlow Geo Integrity, a junior 3-year-old sired by 7HO4213 Robthom INTEGRITY and out of the famous Penlow Georgette Outside.

It works, it's fast, it's easy to use. It’s pretty hard to beat that combination. It's why the Lowry family reaches for UDDERMINT to reduce udder edema in fresh cows and swelling due to mastitis.

"We've used UDDERMINT for several years to soften up udders," says Allan, who along with wife Donna and son Brad, operate Penlow Farms near Almonte, Ontario, Canada. "We use it on fresh cows and heifers to help break down edema - by the next milking, we can see a difference."

The Lowry's massage UDDERMINT into the udder during or right after milking, usually for three or four days to keep udders in top-notch form in their 60-cow registered Holstein herd. Their breeding program is perhaps best known for Penlow Georgette Outside, who was named 2003 reserve all-canadian senior 2-year-old (and nominated for All-American senior 2-year-old), 2004 All-Canadian senior 3-year-old, and 2005 reserve All-Canadian 4-year-old.

"We certainly like UDDERMINT very much," Donna adds. "We also use it to reduce swelling from the occasional mastitis flare-up. We just rub it on and the swelling dissipates by the next milking - and that helps reduce liner slips. I love the smell of it, too."

The Lowry's have curtailed their use of antibiotics by using UDDERMINT on mild mastitis cases. "If there's no response, we'll use antibiotics, but very often we don't have to," Allan says. "In severe cases, when the udder is really hard, we use UDDERMINT and antibiotics right from the start."

Could we take UDDERMINT away from the Lowrys? "You'd have to be bigger than me," Allan quips.

A Tip from Four Winds Farm ... Use UDDERMINT for Udder Conditioning

Four Winds Farm owners Clark and Joy Vilter Four Winds Farm owners Clark and Joy Vilter use UDDERMINT.

Owners of successful show herds know how to present their animals in top-notch form. One of the strategies Four Winds Farm owners Clark and Joy Vilter employ is the application of UDDERMINT on fresh cows with edema.

"We really believe in UDDERMINT," Joy affirms. "We’re glad it came out. It really gets edema down. We used it on a cow that was four days fresh – she went on to win the Guernsey Futurity at Louisville."

Four Winds Farm near Hartland, Wisconsin, is best known for Westlyn Tom Dee EX-96, a four-time Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo and four-time All-American Aged Cow who was recently crowned Supreme Champion of all Supreme Champions in the 75-year history of the Hoard’s Dairyman Cow Judging Contest.

"The last time she (Tom Dee) calved, all we used was UDDERMINT to reduce swelling," Joy says. "She has 12 Excellent daughters and several Excellent granddaughters – they’ve all had UDDERMINT."

The Vilters have used UDDERMINT since it came out ten years ago. "We tried it because it sounded like it would work to reduce inflammation in hocks and edema in udders," Clark recalls. "We use it mainly on udders – we don’t have many banged-up hocks."

Joy likens UDDERMINT to Ben Gay for people – "it heats up." They massage in UDDERMINT over the entire udder of fresh cows after milking. Clark notes that each cow’s needs are different: some cows only need UDDERMINT a couple times while others benefit from six or seven applications.

"We have used different liniments over the years, but UDDERMINT works the best," Clark concludes.

We wouldn’t go to a show without it!

"We’ve used UDDERMINT ever since Select Sires introduced me to it six years ago," says Mark Rueth and Nicki Reape. "We like to use UDDERMINT on cows that get acute mastitis. We’ll give a cow an injectable anti-inflammatory and then apply UDDERMINT, which brings the swelling right down. And, when we travel to the shows, we made sure to take UDDERMINT with us."

Mark Rueth and Nicki Reape are well known for the remarkable cows they care for at their Oxford, Wis., dairy. Many members of the herd are descendants of Stookey Elmpark Blackrose (EX-96-3E), who has over 30 Excellent sons and daughters. In addition, they are the owners of two-time World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion Vandyk-K Integrity Paradise (EX-96-2E). Last year, Mark and Nicki exhibited Lavender Ruby Redrose (EX-95), the only Red and White Holstein to be named Supreme Champion at World Dairy Expo. And their show-ring acclaim doesn’t stop there, Kinyon Linjet Ideal (EX-95), exhibited by Martin Kinyon and Mark Rueth topped the International Holstein Show during the 40th World Dairy Expo. She produced a 365-day record of 44,943 pounds of milk, 2,700 pounds of fat and 1,600 pounds of protein as a 4-year-old.
