Select Sires Raises Money through Impact Sire Print
PLAIN CITY, Ohio, August 13, 2008
— Select Sires recently donated $2,600 to the Holstein Foundation and $2,600 North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge, money that was generated from sales of the “Holstein Impact Sires of the Breed” artwork. The print features 10 Select Sires bulls that have made significant genetic contribution to the improvement of the Holstein breed throughout the world. The Holstein Foundation was presented with a check at the National Holstein Convention, held in June in Wisconsin Dells, Wis.
“The incredible popularity of this print has reminded us what an impact our sires have had in the herds of our customer-owners and we are truly proud to ‘pay it forward’ to these worthy recipients,” said David Thorbahn, general manager for Select Sires. “I’m humbled that we can use the success of our past and present to impact the future of the industry through the Holstein Foundation and Dairy Challenge.”
The mission of the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge is to enhance student experiences and development through an intercollegiate dairy-management competition based on the examination of all aspects of a dairy business. In addition to four regional competitions, the national competition brings together the best and brightest college students aspiring for a career in the dairy industry, empowering them with the resources for real-world success. Select’s contribution to the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge will be used for innovative program development. The Holstein Foundation’s leadership development and outreach programs serve youth and young adults representing all breeds of cattle, the cornerstone of which is the renowned Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI).
The “Holstein Impact Sires of the Breed” artwork was developed to recognize the many Select Sires bulls that have made a lasting impact in the Holstein breed, leaving a legacy of great sons and grandsons, as well as some of the breed’s greatest cows and cow families. The sires featured in the painting are the top-10 vote getters based on a federation-wide ballot poll of Select Sires employees. They are: 7HO5157 Regancrest Elton DURHAM-ET (EX-90-GM); 7HO3948 MJR Blackstar EMORY-ET (EX-97-GM); 7HO2236 Emprise Bell ELTON (EX-95); 7HO5375 Mara-Thon BW MARSHALL-ET (VG-86-GM); 7HO5708 Fustead Emory BLITZ-ET (EX-94-GM); 7HO1897 To-Mar BLACKSTAR-ET (EX-93-GM). Back Row: 7HO980 Walkway Chief MARK (VG-87-GM); 7HO477 GLENDELL Arlinda Chief (EX-93-GM); 7HO543 Carlin-M Ivanhoe BELL (EX-93-GM) and 7HO58 Round Oak Rag Apple ELEVATION (EX-96-GM).
